The August 2015 Merlo Coffee Bean of the Month is from the Kenyan region of Nyeri and Thika; a coffee consistently rich in flavour, with a deep, wine-like acidity and pleasant aroma in its bold profile.
About this Coffee Growing Region
Grown at some 1,800m above sea level, the Kenyan Weithaga Premium AA comes from two prime coffee growing regions in that country in Nyeri and Thika, both including a wide range of native forest ecosystems that support a variety of wildlife.
The premium AA bean is considered to be one of the world’s finest premium gourmet coffees, flourishing amongst the red-orange, loamy volcanic soils of Kenya with the region’s moderate climate and ideal equatorial sunlight, before being full washed and dried on African beds.
The Kenyan Weithaga has a full body and rich, strong, flavour with a very pleasant acidity. The fragrant aroma has floral tones, with a winey finish that also has citrus and berry overtones, making it one of the most sought after coffees in the world and giving it its status as the Connoisseurs Cup.
The coffee industry in Kenya is renowned for its cooperative system of production, processing, milling, marketing and auction system. It involves thousands of small farms and estates, employing more than 6 million Kenyans.
Kenyan coffees are carefully graded after harvest. The beans are separated and rated by size as well as shape, colour, and density, making it one of the world’s finest gourmet coffees.
