A haven for quality coffee, growing anything less in Costa Rica is illegal. In fact, the government has put in place several laws to protect the quality of the coffee production. It's a serious business for the country and its people, and we all benefit as a result.
Only by allowing species of arabica plants to be grown at a federal level do we know that all exported coffee from Costa Rica is detailed, high quality and simply delicious.

A legacy of quality and innovation: The finest Costa Rican coffee
Costa Rica was the first country in Central America to commercialise coffee production, with great success. After arabica coffee plants were introduced from Cuba around 1779, the producers took about 30 years to launch commercially. Coffee from Costa Rica soon became the largest income generator, exceeding exports of sugar, tobacco and other products.
The coffee plants that produce the single origin coffee beans are grown in volcanic soil at a high altitude of 1200-1500 metres above sea level. Over time, volcanic deposits create a nutrient-rich and highly fertile soil that forms the richest agricultural landscapes. With ideal weather conditions, it's perfect for coffee plantations to thrive.
Then, they undergo the €˜honey' processing method, a combination of washed and natural methods. It involves leaving some of the mucilage on part of the cherry before drying, which gives these particular single origin coffee beans an extra sweetness.
While they produce less than 1% of the world's coffee exports, Costa Rica has become the world's 15th largest coffee producer, mainly due to the Costa Rica government investing heavily in machinery and technology. This allowed the coffee producers to be at the forefront of exporting exceptional Costa Rican coffee.
